The programme of Diera do sveta club at Pohoda on the Ground on Thursday, 8 July

Diera do Sveta is a cultural centre and specialized bookstore in Liptovský Mikuláš that creates a background for independent, alternative and minority culture. Their programme at Pohoda on the Ground will include composer Soho Rezanejad, electronic producer Pepper Levain, the groups Hlučné Žihľavy and Cudowne Lata, and Andrea Beton and Alexandra Cihanská Machová will present live music from the Liptov project from the Punctum Tapes label.

12. May 2021

“The goal of the musical dramaturgy was the most diverse selection, both in terms of genres and geography, with quality as the criterion so that we could stand up for it. We also wanted to fulfil a dream to some extent and call artists who might not resonate so much with Liptovský Mikuláš. In principle, we proceeded as we normally do – in the best way possible and with total commitment until exhaustion,” says Robert Repka, the author of the selection and the dramaturge of the cultural centre Diera do sveta.

SOHO REZANEJAD

Soho Rezanejad is a composer, singer, actress, simply a multidisciplinary artist from New York. Her work includes performative alter-egos and collaborations, which she delivers through her label Silicone Records. In 2018, she released the album Six Archetypes, which was given four out of five stars by Spill magazine and Music OMH, and was described as “moving, intoxicating, haunting, truly gorgeous” by The Quietus. Her latest album “Perform and Surrender” is based on several years of live performances and is accompanied by poetry recitations.

PEPPER LEVAIN

Pepper Levain (Berlin / Athens) combines melodic vocals with heavy electronic rhythms. Only recently she has released the debut EP “Welcome to The Other Side”, which gives off a vibrant yet dark 80's vibe.

HLUČNÉ ŽIHĽAVY

Hlučné Žihľavy are an experience of draught, a sick gig, an orgasmic party that speaks more of emptiness than existence. It is a quest along the spiral of discovering the corrosion of society and the self. An acoustic and visual ride to relentless exhaustion, a frantic gallop in search of the meaning of life. This Brussels music-performance concert combines elements of cold wave, noise and rock music. Four musicians, electric guitars, two female voices, synthesizers, pedal effects, a rhythm generator, microsensors for the sound recording of objects, a tape recorder, tennis rackets turned into guitars, a chaos of cables and the motto that “since the world is corrupt, we will be corrupt too.”

CUDOWNE LATA

The Polish band Cudowne Lata consists of singer Ania Włodarczyk and guitarist from Beirut Amina Dargham. In autumn 2008 they released a demo EP with four dreamy, romantic songs that soon captured the hearts of audiences all over Poland. In April 2019, their first single “Zapach i ty” was released, and the music website Porcys praised it as “the Polish single of the year”. In the summer of 2019, they performed at Off Festival in Katowice and shortly after that they released their debut album “Kółko i krzyżyk”. It features nine melodic tracks, catchy guitar solos, synthpop and surprising oriental motifs, and a mysterious sounding omnichord. The album is a nostalgic tale of the 80s and 90s in Poland – at times extending a lighthearted invitation to dance, at times unsettling or quickly transitioning into heartwarming ballads.

LIPTOV: Andrea Beton, Alexandra Cihanská Machová

Andrea Beton and Alexandra Cihanská Machová will present Liptov, a recording from Punctum Tapes label on which they collaborated with other female and male producers. The vinyl compilation Liptov presents twelve compositions that people from the Punctum collective have used to rework the original recordings from the Liptov collection – Panoráma ľudovej piesňovej a hudobnej kultúry (Panorama of Folk Song and Music Culture, OPUS, 1982). The compilation was released this year by Punctum Tapes, which aims to reinterpret traditional folk music culture within the contemporary electronic scene. Andrea Beton aka Marie Čtveráčková aka Mary C is a musician, DJ, curator, publicist, organizer and co-founder of Synth Library Prague. She enjoys exploring new sonic spaces, rumbling rhythmic compositions, restless flows of sound colours, bending recordings into different shapes and the possibilities of a new relationship to playing the violin. Her composition Suché lúky, part of the “Liptov” compilation, was included on the Wire magazine Below the Radar 36 compilation. As part of her performance at the Pohoda festival, she will develop the themes of this piece into a live set.

Alexandra Cihanská Machová is a composer and sound artist from Sabinov, currently based in Prague. Her main means of expression is sound in various forms, from acoustic instruments, field recordings, to live coding and others, however, she often combines this with other media as well. She is currently more intensively involved with sounds in space, sound installation, and sound in virtual environments. Thematically, she examines post-digital sentiment, emotion in technology, sound ecology, and the recontextualization of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology.
