Viagra Boys at Pohoda 2019

Pohoda will host a 6-member, extremely contagious post-punk band from the Swedish metropolis, Viagra Boys. Although they released their debut Street Worms only in September this year, they managed to catch the attention of media like BBC, Pitchfork, Q Magazine, The 405, and The Fader. Pitchfork included their single “Sports” in the Best New Track category, and The Guardian placed the song on the 45th place of the 100 Best Songs of the Year 2018. “Viagra boys are the epitome of the immortality of punk music. I saw them at Reeperbahn, and they were definitely the best band. They go well with Slaves, Sleaford Mods, and The Wildreness. Saxophone and keyboards never sounded so great in punk music and the singerʼs performance is phenomenal. Viagra boys are my personal discovery of 2018,” said Michal Kaščák about the band.

The band originated after one wild night, when bass player Benke ended up with his friend Sebbe, a member of a community of tattooers, in a karaoke bar. When he heard, or rather saw, him sing, he immediately knew he was witnessing something special. Shortly after, they began to write their first songs, teamed up with guitarist Benis, drummer Solo, and saxophonist Oscar: and Viagra Boys came into the world. The name of the band is a play on words referencing the failure of a “male role” in society. The first record was the 12” EP Consistency of Energy, which was discussed by the largest Swedish TV channels. After the first concerts, the news of a unique new band with a raw live expression started spreading, especially in the undergound scene. Sebbeʼs lyrics, wild energy, and stage performance were likened to artists such as Iggy Pop, Gibby Haynes, and Nick Cave.

After releasing the second 12” EP Call of the Wild, they were nominated for the Swedish Grammy and played at prestigious festivals such as Leeds, Reading, Roskilde, and Öya. In September, they released their debut Street Worms. Annie Mac began playing its first single “Sports” in her BBC Radio show, and Pitchfork picked it as the Best New Track. The bandʼs success lies in the perfect parody of everyone they disdain. In particular, they do not spare macho and elitist expressions in society; for example, competitive breeders of pure breeds of dogs “get their piece of cake”. Viagra Boys have recently been on a well sold-out tour at London clubs and we are very excited to bring this hot new band to the Trenčín airport in just half a year.
