Throwback Saturday aka reusable Pohoda cups

Reusable NICKNACK cups have been an integral part of our festival since 2014, always clipped to the belts or backpacks of our visitors, or ideally in hand and full. Thanks to them we’ve been able to reduce our festival’s impact on the environment even more.

For over ten years, the unique design has made “nicknacks” a popular festival souvenir. It reminds you of the festival lineup, is decorated with visual art or sunflowers, and on some, you’ll even find the smiling faces of Meky Žbirka or the trio Filip, Lasica and Satinský. And what about you? Do you tend to keep Pohoda nicknacks?

And by the way, do you know how many Pohodas one NICKNACK cup lasts? Find out the answer in this article.

The life cycle of a reusable cup or how many Pohodas a NICKNACK cup will last

Each reusable Pohoda cup has a life cycle of at least 200 cycles, which in simple terms also means that it replaces a minimum of 200 disposable cups. Each Pohoda reusable cup is used circa 1.75 times per year. This means that the used reusable cups from Thursday and Friday will still manage to get back into the circulation to the festival after being washed. If a reusable cup gets damaged, NICKNACK recycles the material and makes a reusable cup from it again.

Circa 400,000 cups are used at Pohoda each year, which means approximately 700,000 uses. One visitor will therefore use circa 23 returnable cups. The use of reusable cups saves approximately 3 tonnes of waste from disposable cups at each festival.

Our reusable festival cups come to the festival from NICKNACK's external warehouse in Brno, which is only 130 km away from Pohoda. The cups are stored in hygienic boxes and are distributed to our bars, backstage, partners and gastro vendors. Visitors receive a cup when purchasing a draft or bottled drink for a refundable fee. They have the option to exchange the cup (piece for piece) on their next drink purchase. If they do not purchase another drink, they can return the used cup at one of our six return locations, which are open non-stop during the festival. Such used cups are moved to an intermediate warehouse at our festival from where they travel to our supplier's wash line. As we mentioned before, some of the cups manage to return to the festival washed for reuse.

Most of the cups used at Pohoda have a unique design linked to the festival and are therefore used exclusively at our festival.

So how many Pohodas will one reusable NICKNACK cup experience? If you read and counted correctly, you came up with a whopping 114 Pohodas! That's why it's important that you take good care of your NICKNACK cup, don't damage it and don't scratch it. Maybe one day your great-great-great-grandchildren will hold it in their hands.
