The record amount of visual arts at Pohoda 2018

Visual arts at the 22nd Pohoda will be the strongest in the history of our festival. Its main part will consist of art works within the Visual Stage. The grounds will host the work of Ilona Németh Hľadisko pre Pohodu (Auditorium for Pohoda), Mega Viki by Viktor Frešo,  and Minaret. We will honour the big figures of Czechoslovakia with the installation Know Them; Ján and Martina will be commemorated with a symbolic gate Spojili nás (They unified us), visual artists initiative called Reakcia (Reaction), and the winning project of the Pohoda Visual Art Contest, Ján and Martina at Pohoda. Another winner of our contest will draw the largest jumping numbers game called Good Feelings on the taxiway. You will also see the Offsite Specific Installation and the installation of the head of our production, architect Michal Sládek, responding to cut-down areas in forests called Les (Forest). Galéria Žumpa (The Cesspit Gallery) will cross the threshold of its apartment and will take care of your needs at Pohoda with the installations Hra o tróny (Game of Thrones) and Oáza (Oasis). As part of the 4D Gallery on site, you will see again the installations Kôň (Horse) (by Adamčiak) and Bolesť (Pain) (by Sabo); Ivan Csudai will present his Macík (Teddy bear). The HALA project will bring famous Asian performers on its “Open Stage”. A curiosity of the festival will be unique taking photos of artists in the Artist Village using Camera Obscura.  It will be performed by Dávid Doroš as part of his award-winning project “60 seconds with”. Thanks to well-known artists, many new works will be painted on ducts directly at Pohoda. A special piece will be performed on the back side of the Garáž Stage by Danglár. A vernissage will take place at the Garáž on Friday at 2:14 PM, accompanied by the swing music of Funny Fellows.

Visual stage:

I. Németh: Hľadisko pre Pohodu (Auditorium for Pohoda)

An art work in which there is no stage on the other side. The spectator looks at the opposite auditorium. It is entirely up to you whether the work represents for you see the actual narcissism epidemic, a spectator as the centre point of the performance or something else.

P. Olejňák, V. Ondo, P. Galdík, M. Barvirčák: Minaret

Minaret (from the Arabic word manarah, manarat) means a lamp, beacon. The installation has the ambition to present the symbol of an open society as well as solidarity in the light of events related to the refugee crisis.

V. Frešo: Mega Viki

The oversized inflatable self-portrait of a leading visual artist.

I. Hanečák, Pavol Prekop: Know them?

The “Know them?” installation is based on a creative form of commemoration of quality

Czechoslovak figures that suggests a reference to their current alternatives.

M. Dzurek, J. Vajsábel: Spojili nás (They unified us)

A symbolic gate with portraits of Martina Kušníová and Ján Kuciak; on the other hand, a representation of a man and a woman—of anyone of us. An artistic response to the tragedy that has brought together people who care about Slovakia.

D. Sabová, J. Červený, O. Jurčo: Ján and Martina at Pohoda

The artwork works with the invisible but a clear marking of the absence of two people. Through a big current theme in the society, festival visitors can project their personal themes of loss of dear ones and at the same time, interventions in the space are an imaginary dialogue, a narration / illustration of situations in which Ján and Martina could find themselves if they had attended this yearʼs edition as living people... Making memories of them present in different places (black spaces) conceptually clearly speaks of the power of their message that they left for our society: You canʼt kill an idea or a story!

S. Masár: Good Feelings

Through the intervention in the space and reference to a simple child game (jumping numbers), the author stimulates playfulness in every visitor. The jumping numbers game is usually drawn up hastily and entirely at “lowcost”. Masár brings this well-known visual aspect further and gives it a provoking “Cinderella” effect using the length of the festival grounds—drawing a few tens of fields will last at least as much as picking peas and lentils.

Tree stump seats refer to cut-down areas in forests and heads.

S. Komáček, S. Krajčí, J. Vančo: Offsite Specific Instalation

A performance responding to the phenomenon of sports stadiums as instruments of power.

P. Kalmus: Protective safety equipment and wear for a cyclist

A continuation of bicycle variations. The basic idea of ​​the annual bicycle show is the immortal creed of the beginnings of music festivals “Make love not war” and the timeless “Give a chance to peace”.

An initiative of visual artists, which joins with the apolitical protests reminding of the murder of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová. The reaction will be part of the opening concert of the festival.

The Žumpa Gallery

Žumpa (cesspit) is a gallery on the toilet of a rental apartment that aims to present it “the freshest local artistry”. This year, Žumpa will finally cross the threshold of its apartment and will take care of your needs also at Pohoda. It will be fragrant...

A. Garová – Oáza (Oasis (Saturday) at 12:12 PM

HALA:

The HALA project presents the contemporary visual art in Trenčín. In collaboration with the international Performance Art Festival, Transart Communication, it brings the figures of contemporary art / performance to Pohoda.

“Open stage”—a place for free expression of festival guests connected with shows of the invited performers: Lai Chun Ling (HK), Shu Yang (CN), To Yeuk (HK), Ioko Ero Nikaido (HK), Liping Ting (TW), Sun Yi-Jou (TW), Wen Peng (CN), and He Libin (CN) 

4D GALLERY:

 

4D Gallery is a creative centre supporting the creation of works of art, especially in the field of sculpture, objects, and installations. It provides artists with unique backgrounds (workshops, studios, technology) for the realization of large-scale and technologically demanding works.

M. Adamčiak—Kôň (A Horse)

A horse is a great toy inspired by folk wooden toys found in the archaeological area of Kyjatice, and at the same time, it humorously resembles a Trojan horse, in which no one can hide. The windows are designed for visitors to take pictures through them.

L. Sabo: Bolesť (Pain)

The composition represents airborne missiles falling into the base of a cross. These rockets replace the commonly used pain symbol of the Christian iconography—Jesusʼ nails. Using this object, Sabo tells on the current world full of war conflicts and the destruction of moral and cultural values. 

I. Csudai: Macík (Teddy bear)

The object originated as the emergence of the main themes that Csudai portrays in his paintings, abstracting a childʼs toy—a teddy bear. He brings the adults back to childhood in their memories and is a glamorous giant toy for children.

60 seconds with: Dávid Doroš
Camera obscura portraits by Dávid Doroš
Dávid Doroš will take photos of artists in the Artist Village using a special camera obscura technique and black and white film. The project title is derived from the exposure duration of 60 seconds. His photos were also awarded at the Slovak Press Photo contest.
