The Programme of Garages at Pohoda 2023
Fans of young music, underground, harder music and guitars can look forward to up to two Garages curated by Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt). See what bands will perform on Garages this year.
12. June 2023
Eversame
Eversame is a young four-member band from Žilina. In terms of genre, their music is most comparable to alternative rock, indie, midwest emo and shoegaze. In the current line-up, they have been playing together for about a year and managed to release their debut album Tell Me Where the Flowers Are (2023). Their concerts are characterised by a friendly atmosphere and frequent audience participation.
„Eversame is a band that may remind some of classic alt-rock artists from the 90s, but for me it's as modern as it gets. It's not easy to do indie rock in English in the Slovak music scene without making the listener cringe. When you listen to their debut album tell me where the flowers are, exactly the opposite happens. You want to hear more. Awesome band," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Kovošrot
Kovošrot is a fusion of all kinds of metal subgenres, combined into a compact metal music monster. A fusion of rusty chaos, dirty noise and dreamy melodies. Their live performance is a must-see.
"If there ever will be something like a metal renaissance in Slovakia, this band should be one of those at its forefront. Their music on their eponymous debut EP oozes a cocktail of influences from every conceivable orifice, perfectly blended thanks to their very distinctive musicianship. Their live performances effortlessly embody all the essential metal poses and underground smell, yet devoid of any pretentiousness and spiced with a bit of self-irony," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
DETI
The punk band DETI comes from the DIY scene of Bratislava to unleash their fast-paced sets. Combining minimalist fuzz riffs with hard bass without unnecessary solos they present dirty garage minimalism with a 90s visual oscillation.
„I don't know of many bands whose live shows both scare you and make you want to get closer to them. Punk simply never dies. There is no way. There is always a band that is so punk that when you hear them, you feel that this music has never existed before and that punk is something that has just come into being. I feel that way about DETI. Probably the most awesome band I've seen in years," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
SEKS
The band describe their work as very "dirty" hardcore guitar music. Apparently, music theory isn't their thing, but if you want music you can have fun with, then you want SEKS . :)
„Can I love a band whose music and live shows I've only heard and seen in a few Instagram stories? Sure. I don't know of any released records. But if there are, it'll be a massacre. If a band can convince you with a couple of random, poorly shot 15-second videos, there is certainly something special about them," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Pipesh
Pipesh make you feel like punk has just been invented today. These guys and their friend who loves to jump around the stage (which I hope will happen also at Pohoda) seem like a materialised VHS recording of an underground concert somewhere in the late 80s, when dedicated hardcore punk was at its peak while something was brewing in the underground that would break into commercial realms a few years later in the form of Nirvana and others. Their first official record is underway. I feel honoured to be involved in it," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Les Myzérables
Les Myzérables play post-punk with lyrics that aren't just about the contrasts between small town mentality and the rest of civilization. They have recorded three albums so far, the last of which is about the life and death of mass murderer Olga Hepnarová.
After that, they released a short EP Predmanželský sex mixtape vol.2 (Premarital Sex mixtape vol.2) , where they tried out what disco and pop sound like from people who have no idea about it.
„These guys have been playing for some time now. And they mean business, because the kind of life they describe in their songs would have stopped a weak character from making music a long time ago. But not them. On the contrary, for them it's an endless source of inspiration for songs, some of which – in my humble opinion – will one day become legendary," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Ychabods
Ychabods was born in the autumn of 2021 when musician Mario Selecký, previously active in various projects, approached his former bandmate, drummer Filip Paulo. In the spring of 2022, the two locked themselves in the studio to record their debut album Homecooking. At the same time, they decided to go on tour and brought in bassist Ľuboš Ďuriš, a former member of The Wilderness, and later guitarist Martin Molnár, known from the Family Friend and Ghostly Silent projects.
The songs of Ychabods vary from track to track, but above all they are a cocktail of the 60s and 90s. They are energetic rock songs with melodic riffs, Dylanesque folk, blues or cool funk grooves. In April 2023 they released the single Bread and Salt.
"The existence of this band makes me very happy. In a time when there are all kinds of trap metal or phonk songs and punk mutations, Ychabods come with a completely different approach to music. Musically, they're reminiscent of the old Slovak big beat era, combining this genre with a contemporary professional sound, socio-critical lyrics and the self-deprecating detachment of a band that comments on their outsider status with a grin: "Nobody listens to this music anymore." Interestingly, one of the band members is a former founding member of The Wilderness," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
The Nosebleeds
The Nosebleeds is an indie-dance-punk-rock band from Trnava, formed in late 2022. Their music is a blend of garage rock, britpop with dance elements, heavily influenced by the early 2000s indie rock scene. Their catchy and energetic songs are great for dancing, just as they are for headbanging.
The band has released their debut single Skunk Frank as a result of winning Nefkus Creative House contest, which allowed them to record the single in studio, followed by their recently released single Pick up the Phone. The band has played few gigs in small clubs and pubs around Trnava and Bratislava, and are looking forward to perform at Pohoda Festival for the first time.
"I thought attempts to revive the Britrock of the early 00s were long gone. But apparently not. And finally, after all the attempts I've heard so far, I found myself at a concert by a band that got it right. Maybe it's the fact that no one else is trying these days. But it's probably more because it's just a good band," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Faux Paux
Faux Paux is a rap band from Košice and a group of people with the same values, ideals and view of current events not only in music but also in society. Their work brings to life stories about painting graffiti, night bars and the street as well as coping with their own life problems and situations.
Their latest EP HESOYAM features four tracks that reference the cheats in a popular video game, taking Faux Paux's original sound and aesthetic to a new level. In 2023, the individual members plan to release solo projects in collaboration with the members of the Mill Creative collective.
„A collective of rappers that deserves attention. Some members have a distinct punk past, others have been around rap forever. Their beats are some of the best I've heard in Slovakia, and there are so many of them on stage that it sometimes reminds me of Wu-Tang. Like a big family from Košice. And everyone knows that Košice and the surrounding area is a breeding ground for the best rap," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Supaspicybois
Supaspicybois are a pungent element created by the extreme living conditions of Košice's high school dormitories. An experimental multigenre rendition of the stories, thoughts and outlandish reflections of two boys from the dirty, dark corners of Košice, Prague and the internet.
„Who wouldn't love these guys? Their songs brim with pure, almost childlike creative joy, their concerts almost turn into ketchup happenings and their lyrics make the corners of the listener's mouth twitch – just like their jokes on one of Slovakia's best meme profiles. Sometimes we have to stop being so serious," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
Kazostroj
Kazostroj was formed in 2017 as a one-man electropunk project. However, shortly after it transformed into a three-member formation that combines the rawness of hardcore punk with the melancholy of Nordic black metal. The short and intense songs deal with self-pity, coping with death and the frustrating life in a small town. They have several records under their belt. Their latest EP Masopust, deals with the memories of the singer's grandfather, who survived his childhood in a Nazi-occupied village in western Slovakia during World War II.
„There are never enough bands that take a different angle on what the average Slovak fan considers his or her pride and joy. Nor are there enough bands that keep the good tradition of mixing punk, crust and metal alive in this way. That's what Kazostroj are here for," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
ďas
The band Ďas has been active since 2017, but their concerts could probably be counted on one hand. They spend most of their time in the rehearsal room, tweaking the details for months. Musically, they don't like to be pigeonholed, so they describe their work as dark beat or poetic space dirt with a flair for lyrics and primal numbers. However, their music is a mixture of post-rock, progressive, alternative metal and art rock. This year, the classic lineup of guitar, bass, drums and vocals is supplemented by a synthesiser.
„There aren't many bands like this in our country. Few. The moment you feel transported by the music to the era of Musicbox bands, you start to hear experimental world music, then a hint of metal – all with a vibe that is peculiar to the singer, who has her roots deep in the Slovak DIY punk scene. A must-see performance," Garage curator Denis Bango (The Wilderness, Fvck_Kvlt) comments on the booking.
