Underground
"Adam, what does the underground mean to you? Who represents it?"
"It's difficult for me to answer this question without saying that I don't know. If you were to ask me about the current embodiment of the underground, I wouldn't hesitate to mention Denis Bango. I find his approach a rather fitting attempt to carry on the nihilistic punk spirit of the past, although I recognise that his modes of expression are toothless in today's context. But that's a rather half-hearted response because temporarily capturing the essence of something is not really representing it. In this sense, the most accurate representation is probably that which has not yet emerged. The iconic works of today's underground have yet to be created, and the defining slogans have yet to be inked on the skin. Many of the distinctions that once separated the mainstream from the counterculture have become outdated. Government funding now supports DIY albums, and coworking spaces host anti-fascist festivals. This reinforces the importance of drawing a line that has the potential to be more subversive than ever. I'm referring to the line that separates a world of oppressive hierarchies, interpersonal competition, and self-centredness from a world defined by solidarity and a sense of security. In such a world, revolution is almost spontaneous."
