The band was founded in New York, but after the first album Miracles, its members moved to their father's birthplace. Together with the producer duo of Bobby Dixon and Lloyd James, they recorded Protext Us Jah, One Calling a year later and Don't Haffi Dread in 1999. Those were followed by The Morgan Heritage Family and Friends and a live album Live in Europe!. They continued in the tradition ’a new year, a new album’ with the release of More Teachings ... Two years later they released Three in One and Full Circle. After the album Mission In Progress, they took a longer break during which the band members devoted their time to their solo projects. In 2012, they made a comeback with the single The Return, followed by Here Come the Kings.

It was after the comeback when an extremely successful chapter in the band's history began. They won a Grammy in Best Reggae Album category for Strictly Roots (2015) which also became the best-selling Reggae album in 2015 and 2016. They also won a Grammy for their latest album Avrakedabra. On the reggae scene, the alleged rivalry between prominent reggae clans, Marley and Morgan, was occasionally talked about, but they disproved these rumours with the song "One Family" from this album, which hosts Stephen and Ziggy Marley. Huffington Post wrote the following about the record: "Avrakedabra is one heck of an album! Great harmonies, excellent arrangements and beau coup outstanding reggae tunes. After winning a Grammy, it’s difficult to surpass expectations. But Morgan Heritage pulled it off. This album is even better than the last. Kudos to Morgan Heritage!
