London-born Geordie Greep was just 18 when he and his fellow students from the BRIT School formed the indie rock band Black Midi in 2017. With their debut album Schlagenheim (2019), they earned a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize. This success was followed by two more studio albums—Cavalcade (2021) and Hellfire (2022)—along with multiple club and festival tours, including a stop in Slovakia, where they sold out Bratislava’s Fuga in 2019 and shone at Pohoda 2022. By the summer of 2024, when Black Midi announced an indefinite hiatus, Geordie had already been playing solo shows, culminating in the announcement of his debut album.
The album The New Sound was released in October 2024, and as its title suggests, it showcases different musical influences compared to the artist's time with Black Midi, most notably a surprising abundance of Brazilian Tropicália. Written and recorded during Black Midi’s intense touring schedule, the album took shape in sessions held in London and São Paulo, with contributions from over thirty musicians. The album features a wide array of instruments, including plenty of percussion, saxophone, trumpets, cello, and trombone. Don’t be mistaken, though – it’s still progressive rock, packed with electric guitars and drums, some of which were recorded by Geordie’s Black Midi bandmate, drummer Morgan Simpson.
In The New Sound, Geordie Greep invites you into his fantasy world filled with eccentric characters and made up stories, often pushing the limits of convention. “No matter how desperate or how disgusting these characters are in the songs, I hope at some point, people at least feel sorry for them or feel a similar feeling as them,” he adds.
"The New Sound is for me the most memorable and distinctive album of last year - because of Geordie's genius, the variety of influences, but also because of the strangely captivating sense of confusion that makes you have no idea whether the singer is 60 or 16. And Geordie is also an idol of the Slovak garage scene and obscure Facebook groups, so booking him was a no-brainer!," says Majo Tesák from the Pohoda Festival team.
