Supervised by the likes of Ján Lebiš, Dušan Kállay and Igor Rumanský, Marek Ormandík studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Right after the fall of Communist regime, his work reached abroad, where he received several awards (Main Award for painting - Mandrac 94, Croatia; Meulensteen Art Award, Premio internationale d’arte San Crispino, Italy, etc.) At home, he was awarded Crystal Wing for visual art, Martin Benka Award, Aurel for the best CD cover or IKS Prize for art. He’s the author of illustrations in many books and albums (Lipa spieva Lasicu, Návšteva po rokoch). His suggestive paintings and drawings with comments by Milan Lasica were released and titled Milancholia.
When painting, Marek Ormandík mainly uses a thick brush. His paintings are dominated by figures in kneeling or abducted positions. He uses archetypes of characters from Christianism and Ancient mythology. According to aesthetician Peter Michalovič, the main theme of Ormandík’s paintings is not human figures, but the images of human affects. His effort always leads to capturing expression, to painting emotions. Sometimes he captures feelings of joy, at other times, it’s pain, but, primarily, they are always culturally unmediated affects. This Sunday at Doma Dobre concert, you can have a look at what kind of emotions he’s about to capture at a night shelter for the homeless.
