Concert for Ukraine With a Powerful Programme This Sunday in Bratislava
Tomorrow, on Sunday, 16 March, the Concert for Ukraine will take place, featuring performances by Para, David Koller, Slobodná Európa, Peter Lipa, RozpoR, as well as Ukrainian singer Mila Medvedovska with Katka Koščová and pianist Daniel Špiner. The concert will be held at Bratislava’s Main Square, starting at 7:00 PM, with free admission.
15. March 2025
We have been organising the Concert for Ukraine every year in collaboration with the Bratislava Cultural and Information Centre since the outbreak of the full-scale war in 2022. The event serves as a way for us and the wider public to express solidarity and support for our eastern neighbours. “I appreciate everyone who comes to the Concert for Ukraine, whether they’re on stage or in the crowd. More than ever, it’s important to show that people in Slovakia can distinguish between the victim and the aggressor, and that helping those in need is a fundamental act of humanity. I hope we will see a great turnout at the square,” says Michal Kaščák from the Pohoda team.
The concert will open with Para, followed by Slobodná Európa, Peter Lipa, RozpoR, David Koller, and Daniel Špiner with Katka Koščová. The event will be brought to a symbolic close by Ukrainian singer Mila Medvedovska. Unfortunately, the previously announced performance by the Lúčnica Choir, which was supposed to open the concert, will no longer take place. “We have received information that the Ministry of Culture exerted pressure on the choir, leading them to cancel their participation. This is yet another example of the ministry hindering cultural events rather than supporting them, obstructing the natural functioning of the cultural scene, and effectively intimidating its own top organisations,” explains Michal Kaščák regarding the programme change.
Alongside the musicians, several special guests will take the stage, including Dorota Vlnová and Andrea Kalinová, who were part of a women’s team that delivered an ambulance to the frontlines in December 2024. The ambulance was used to save lives for nearly two months before it was hit by Russian shelling. The wreckage of the ambulance will be displayed next to the stage. Short speeches between the performances will be given by Pali Pekarčík, author of the film Svetloplachosť and founder of the initiative Deťom Ukrajiny; poet Mirka Ábelová; Radim Dvořák, Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia; and Fedor Blaščák from the Open Society Foundation, who will also speak about the current activities of the Czech Endowment Fund for Ukraine. The concert will be hosted by Martin Staňo.
The Mayor of Bratislava, Matúš Vallo, has taken the event under his patronage.
For those unable to attend in person at the Main Square, a live broadcast will be available on the Pohoda Festival and Bratislava Cultural and Information Centre (BKIS) Facebook pages, as well as on the websites or pages of several media partners and supporting organisations.
