Chai at Pohoda 2020

Chai are four classmates from Nagoya, Japan, who could be described as: “Make pink, girlband and kawai great again.” Kawaii means “friendly” in Japanese and this quartet is trying to redefine the term with their overexposed means of expression and shows. Pink is the name of their debut, which, according to Pitchfork, is a reprieve at times when we are in short supply moments of pure joy. They add: “A mix of ambition, sincerity, and palpable excitement seems to manifest in everything they do: their genre-defying recordings, their thrilling performances, and their graciousness in person.”

Pitchfork confirmed their words also by inviting the band to two Pitchfork-organised festivals, where the band caused a lot of excitement; their appearance at the Barcelona's Primavera was similar in kind. Their second album Punk was even included in Best New Music by Pitchfork. The Line of Best Fit describe it as “heady, dazzling blend of pop, punk, dance, funk and electronica, moulded into a swirl of kaleidoscopic energy.” With an average of 86 out of 100 on Metacritic, the album ranks among the top recordings of the year, which shows in the Top album of the year chart (Stereogum) and the Essential new artists of the year chart (NME). NME said they sound like a sugar rush of colour and sunshine that causes unavoidable happiness. It may not sound like flattery, but it is. Come to get an instant dose of musical joy delivered by Chai at the Trenčín Airport in early July.
