Barbora Tomášková at Pohoda 2022

Barbora Tomášková at Pohoda 2022

Barbora Tomášková, an extraordinarily inventive young author, will also debut at Pohoda. The former student at VŠMU (The Academy of Performing Arts, program: Composition) and VŠVU (The Academy of Fine Arts and Design, program: Sculpture) can be characterized by her unconventional approach to music-making and its live implementation. She combines live electronic music with objet trouvé as well as with her own DIY sound objects she designed and constructed during her studies at VŠVU in Bratislava. Barbora is the author of a made-to-order concert for NEXT Festival, she collaborates with the Czech Radio and composes scenic music and film scores. Last year, she became the Konvergencie competition prizewinner and her composition for solo piano was selected for the World New Music Days in China organized by ISCM (The International Society for Contemporary Music).

Combining live electronic music with acoustic instruments, Barbora builds soundscapes whose musical flow springs from intuition and ritual.

Through the core of her sound universe pulsate self-made sounds. Musical instruments she uses include sound objects she has built herself. In combination with live electronic music, they transform into hybrid instruments.

Apart from solo performance, she also makes music for classical music arrangements that reflects principles of merging the acoustic world with live electronica as well as scenic music with film scores.

Barbora was part of VENI academy and VENI ensemble; she guested in the Dunami Ensemble; she played within duo Barbora Tomášková (piano) + Rozália Miklášová (violin), in her own group and also as a music performer of compositions dating from the second half of the twentieth century. She collaborates with filmmakers who composed film scores for several documentaries and animated films awarded at European festivals. Her music was presented at festivals of new contemporary music in several European countries (Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Portugal, Spain, Georgia). She gained a lot of experience as a student of the Master’s Degree in Composition at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto.

As Richard Michalík from Hviezdne noci Bytča Festival wrote: “Composer Barbora Tomášková merges live electronic music with acoustic instruments whose untraditional combination allows her to create complex compositions and colorful sound textures. She creates her own sound objects that she uses during her performance and thanks to her approach to sound itself, she bends conventions in both worlds: classical as well as electronic music.”
