Icelandic band BSÍ won hearts in Slovakia after their playful song “Vesturbæjar Beach” featured in the Pohoda 2024 Aftermovie. Best friends Silla and Julius prove that even in Iceland’s gloomy weather, sunny and carefree music can blossom.
BSÍ named themselves after Reykjavík's central bus terminal, paying tribute to what they consider the most miserable place in all of Iceland. Their music reflects a similar humour; they don’t take themselves too seriously. addressing their doubts through their songs, but above all, they create whatever feels authentic to them in the moment.
They play what they’ve dubbed “riot grrrl lo-fi-cute-punk,” which we’d describe as a brilliantly crafted lo-fi punk with a pop twist. Their debut album, Sometimes Depressed… But Always Antifascist (2021), features five melancholic tracks that perfectly capture the Icelandic atmosphere, alongside five upbeat and cheerful tunes that make you feel like you’ve been transported to a sunny Florida beach. Both sides of their musical identity are worth your attention—and both are exceptional.
They’re planning to release new tracks in 2025, so there’s plenty to look forward to.
