Ernest Ranglin & friends

Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin was able to direct people's attention to jazz, reggae, and ska during the peak of “Beatlesmania”. He participated in songs such as “My Boy Lillipop” and the music for the James Bond film (Dr. No) and collaborated with artists such as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. The godfather of Jamaican music and rocksteady, reggae, and ska style, he will come to Pohoda with his All Star Band composed of Cheikh Lô (vocals), Tony Allen (drums), Courtney Pine (saxophone), Alex Wilson (piano), and Ira Coleman (contrabass).

Self-taught guitar player, Ernest Ranglin became one of the most recognized players of this instrument. In the year when Rolling Stone released their debut album, Melody Maker readers rated him as the best jazz guitarists of the world. He has collaborated with artists like Millie Small, The Wailers (Bob Marley), Jimmy Cliff, and Monty Alexander. With his nephew Gary Crosby, he founded the band Jazz Jamaica. All his life he was doing one thing: good music. His story is also part of a documentary series about the roots of reggae (“Roots Of Reggae: The Ernest Ranglin Story”). Ernest Ranglin has released more than 30 solo albums (Below the Bassline, Surfin'...) and has had a huge number of successful collaborations. It is no wonder that he will be accompanied by really prominent musicians on his "farewell" tour:

•         Cheikh Lô behind the microphone (winner of last year's Womex Award),

•         Tony Allen on drums (the best drummer of all times according to Brian Eno),

•         Courtney Pine on saxophone (jazzman, holder of several doctorates and titles of the British Empire for his contribution to music),

•         Alex Wilson on piano (winner of BBC Jazz Awards, arranger of the album Area 52 of the duet Rodrigo y Gabriela)

•         Ira Coleman on the bass (Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams...).

Hearing play live just one of these musicians is a great experience. You can see and hear them at the same stage at the same time at Pohoda 2016.
