Bilderbuch

Bilderbuch

Ten years ago, they sang songs from English fairy tale books and today they sell out sports halls… With the reputation of being the most distinctive indie-rock band in German speaking countries. Bilderbuch is a young four-member band from Kremsmünster, Upper Austria.

At the time of band’s formation (2005), its members were only 14 to 15 years old. They merge indie, rock, RnB and hip-hop in their music, but they take inspiration from other genres as well. The band members wear glamour accessories you would hardly find in fancy Viennese boutiques: they are mostly from second hand shops.

Six years ago, their debut Nelken und Schillinge saw its release. It received 4 out of 5 stars in the review of music magazine Musikexpress. In 2011, they released a follow-up album Die Pest im Piemont. After that, Karl Fluch of Der Standard named them one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists in Austria. Internationally-wise, the most significant moment came with their single “Maschin.” Besides a huge success in charts of German speaking countries, a video for the song earned the band several nominations (for instance at the Miami International Film Festival). In the end-of-year charts of the German version of Noisey (Music by Vice), they were number three and got ahead of names such as Arcade Fire, Bastille or Nick Cave. They also earned four nominations in the 2014 Amadeus Austrian Music Awards and won FM4 Award (listeners’ choice). At the end of 2013, German Spotify listed them as number one among the “Spotlight on 2014” acts.

At the end of February, their third album Schick Schock came out and made it to the top in Austria right way. Spiegel weekly says their mix of pop-funk-R&B-hip-hop on this album sounds better than ever before. Their vocalist Maurice Ernst said for Die Presse that the band fights against dogmas and stereotypes in music. See for yourself how good they are at it at this year’s Pohoda.
