The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices + Georgi Andreev & Quarto Quartet BG
The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices are a global phenomenon with a fascinating history. Their work and worldwide success is considered by many to be one of the milestones in the development of world music.
Formed in the 1950s, the choir aimed to preserve and revitalise Bulgarian folk music and traditions against anti-communist musical influences. A turning point came when Swiss musicologist Marcel Celliér recorded and released their singing on the album Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares (Volume 1) in 1975, later re-released on the 4AD label. They won a Grammy for the second album.
At 4AD, they met the legendary duo Dead Can Dance and their singer Lisa Gerrard, who was inspired by the choir’s distinctive vocals, which can be heard particularly in the duo’s best-known hit, "The Host of Seraphim," featured in many films. In 2018, they recorded an entire album with Lisa Gerrard, titled BooCheeMish.
Their distinctive voice has captivated many music legends. Kate Bush invited them to collaborate on three songs for her 1989 album The Sensual World, they've collaborated with Bobby McFerrin, and one of their songs was played at David Bowie's wedding, replacing the wedding classic "Here Comes the Bride."
The legendary choir will open the Pohoda programme on the main stage on Saturday. They will also perform with the composer and conductor Georgi Andreev and the musicians from string quartet Quarto Quartet at Trenčín Airport, featuring new songs as well as their best-known ones.
