At the age of twelve, she won talent contest Open Mic UK (out of ten thousand participants). At fourteen, she first entered the TOP 20 UK Singles Chart with cover song “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver. This recording made her famous also beyond the borders of the UK. The single was number one in the Netherlands and its video went viral on YouTube. The popularity of the song was also due to its use in the series The Vampire Diaries and Being Human. Birdy has since recorded a number of favourite covers such as “People Help the People”, “The A Team”, “Shelter”, and “Let Her Go”. In 2011, she released eponymous debut album Birdy, which became number one in global sales in Australia and Belgium (number 13 in the UK).
In 2012, she performed at the opening ceremony of the Summer Paralympic Games in London. In the 2013, she released her second album, Fire Within, which already introduced original songs. The album went gold in sales in Britain and Germany and platinum in France. In addition to series, she also participated on soundtracks of several films. She did three songs in The Fault in Our Stars. “Just a Game” was used in The Hunger Games, and together with Mumford & Sons, she recorded song “Learn Me Right” for fairy tale Brave, for which she was nominated for Grammy.
Earlier this year, she released song “Keeping Your Head Up” (extremely successful on the radio), which was the first single of her third album Beautiful Lies. Allmusic editor, Neil Z. Yeung, wrote in his review that it is Birdy´s evolution, as a singer of acoustic covers turned into a self-confident and strong artist, and he went on: “The album offers a depth that moved Birdy from Ingrid Michaelson to the territory occupied by singers like Lorde, Florence (and the Machine), and Lana Del Rey”. Also the overall average of the album on Metacritics is the very respectable 73%.
Fans watched her videos on YouTube half a million times and her tracks are heard on Spotify by six million people every month. Birdy is among the most watched singers today. We will be able to see why next summer at our festival.
